Hi, I’m 15 and want to start a band, i already convinced my friends, but now i need to convince my parents and everytime i tell them about it they say instead of thinking about music go study, i dont know why because i get good grades, they buy me guitars only if i think of it as a hobby not to get serious about it. So can anyone please tell me how to convice them.

my Comments

It is a stretch of your imagination and creativity. there comes a time in life when something like a hobby can really help you out. just be reasonable. Say for example, you will only have band practice 3 times a week for an hour each, and for the other time you will concentrate on your studies.

Show them the movie “Sid and Nancy”.

I hate to tell you this but punk has died! try to do a folk band as they seem to be coming back!

Find a song they like, learn it on the guitar, and play it very well for them…(sort of “buttering them up…or call the band The Mom & Dads…)

i am starting a punk band, and i want to know a good microphone to get; i am the singer. we will hopefully sound kinda like a mix between the ramones, casualties, lower class brats, and sex pistols. i want a mike that sounds good, and is durable and such. so ya, any suggestions for a microphone for a punk band? and also, can mikes plug into an amp, or only a PA system? just wondering

my Comments

The Shure SM57 is a good reliable mic.

I’d go with the Shure SM58. The SM57 is a primarily an instrument mic- better for miking up your amps/drums, although it can be used for vocals. The SM58 is tough as nails, and pretty cheap as far as mics go. The SM58 has been around forever and is far and away the most popular vocal mic for any type of music. You can pick up a new SM58 on eBAy for under $100. There are tons of them on eBay. Yes, you can use a regular amp for microphones, but most good mics have a XLR jack instead of a regular 1/4 inch phono jack like on guitar cords and an XLR plug will not fit into the vast majority of instrument amps. To use a mic on a regular guitar amp, you’ll need either a mic cord with a 1/4 inch phono jack or an adapter (XLR to 1/4 inch plug). You should definitely get something like a 4-channel P.A. Vocals will not sound as crisp coming out of guitar amp. Also it is not at all recommended to have two or more sources (i.e. vox and guitar) coming from one guitar amp. However it is perfectly OK to have more than one source going through a P.A. Plus a good P.A. will mean you can play anywhere (and still get a decent sound) as opposed to just playing at places that have a house P.A.

I saw this video at a Fall Out Boy concert recently. Most other videos seemed to be other Fueled By Ramen bands, but I don’t think this one is, as none of the bands really look like this one. The singer had longer hair and mostly wore a white dress shirt–there was also a lot of red in the video and girls kissing in various places, but mainly while getting their mugshots taken. I have no idea how the song goes, as there was no sound.

Depends really on what you mean by Punk. Believe it or not, The Go Go’s were considered punk when they first came on the scene (definitely not by 1985, but you see what I mean.) Here’s a list of some of the most popular: Black Flag Bad Religion Circle Jerks The Cramps Dead Kennedys (a BIG band in 1985) Descendants Husker Du (also very big in the early 80’s) NY Dolls (they were one of the first punk bands to tour, but were massively influential through the 80’s and even to today) NOFX Iggy Pop Ramones Social Distortion That should cover a bulk of the big American punk bands. In the mid-80’s punk was getting a nice reprieve from public scrutiny because of metal and the rise of Dungeons & Dragons and all of those other “Satanic” elements of society. I don’t think I could really pick a favorite or most influential of the bands above. I do however think that going with the Ramones, probably the most famous of late 70’s/80’s punk, is a bit of a disservice, since I’ve heard a lot of musicians refer to the above bands as influential. Good luck!
